Swear Jar
After Emma, 7, declared her day “shithouse”, and Holly, 12, called the cat a “prick”, Nichola and Michael knew their swearing had got out of hand. A swear jar was established. It was soon full. They used the money for a rare meal out. So convivial was the evening, so delicious the food (“These c…s can cook!” said Emma), it left them wanting more. While Nichola would later concede the subsequent escalation in swearing was regrettable, she thought their increasingly frequent nights out were bringing them closer together. “F…en oath,” said Michael cheerfully, fishing in his pocket for a coin.
