Competitors take part in the belt race during the 1933 Bondi Surf Life Saving Carnival. The first surf carnivals took place not long after the formation of the Bondi club in 1907. These early carnivals had the popular surfboat race but also featured novelty events like the Pillow Fight and Chariot Race. The belt race came into its own and joined the surfboat race as the most prestigious event from the 1920s through to the 1970s.
