Sydney to Hobart from Above, 2012

120: Entrants in the 2012 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race jockey for position as they approach the heads on Boxing Day 2012. Maxi yacht Wild Oats XI would not only go on to win the race outright but would also win on handicap. It was the 68th running of the “blue water classic”. The event came about in 1945 as a way of dealing with the hangover of World War II and was intended to be little more than a cruise, until Captain John Illingworth with his yacht Rani, suggested a race. Like Wild Oats XI, Rani won both line and handicap honours. Since then it has become one of the top three offshore yacht races in the world.
